The selection process saw coaches from Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League participants, along with national team coaches and 55 journalists, vote for their top picks. Each participant designated three players, allocating five, three, and one point respectively.

Messi, Haaland, and De Bruyne emerged as the frontrunners, securing the highest scores. However, specific scores for these stars remain undisclosed by UEFA. The highly anticipated announcement of the winners is slated for the Champions League group draw event in Monaco on August 31.

Standout Performers and Rankings:

In the rankings, midfielder Ilkay Gundogan secured the fourth position with 129 points, closely followed by Rodri with 110 points. Kylian Mbappe claimed the sixth spot, amassing 82 points. The list continued with Luka Modric at 33 points, Marcelo Brozovic at 20 points, Declan Rice at 14 points, Alexis Mac Allister at 12 points, and Jesus Navas at 6 points. Notably, only the aforementioned 11 players received points from the evaluating board.

Prestigious History and Notable Names:

The UEFA Best Player Award was instituted in the 2010-2011 season, with Messi emerging as its maiden recipient. Cristiano Ronaldo boasts the record for the most wins, having clinched the award three times (2014, 2016, and 2017), while Messi secured the honor twice (2011 and 2015). Over the last three seasons, Kevin de Bruyne consistently secured the second spot, trailing behind Robert Lewandowski, Jorginho, and Karim Benzema. Notably, Haaland marks his inaugural appearance in the coveted Top 3.

Season Highlights and Award Predictions:

In the 2022-2023 season, De Bruyne and Haaland made significant contributions, guiding Manchester City to a triumphant treble. Meanwhile, Messi proved instrumental in PSG’s Ligue 1 victory and played an instrumental role in Argentina’s World Cup triumph. Consequently, Messi stands as a formidable contender for the award, given his exceptional feats during the season.

UEFA has also revealed the Top 3 nominations for the best male coach of the year on August 17. The nominees include Pep Guardiola, Luciano Spalletti, and Simone Inzaghi. While this award seems likely to be claimed by Guardiola, notable mention goes to Lionel Scaloni, who guided Argentina to a World Cup victory but was ineligible for consideration due to UEFA’s criteria.
